Onrise and Learfield partner to bring comprehensive mental health care to college athletics

OUR STORY

Built by People Who Get It

Onrise was founded by a psychiatrist and mother of athletes, alongside retired athletes who understand the mental health challenges of high-performance sport.

A Mother's Perspective

As a psychiatrist and mother of athletes, I witnessed firsthand the mental health struggles that high-performance athletes face—anxiety, depression, burnout, identity crisis when injury strikes. Yet access to specialized care was limited and expensive.

I knew there had to be a better way. But I also knew I couldn't solve this alone. I needed to partner with people who'd lived it—retired athletes who understood the pressures from the inside.

That's how Onrise was born. A collaboration between clinical expertise and lived athletic experience. Because mental health care in sports shouldn't be an afterthought or a luxury—it should be standard, accessible, and delivered by people who actually understand what it means to compete at the highest level.

The Pressure Never Stops

Every competition, every play, every moment matters. You're constantly under scrutiny—from coaches, teammates, media, fans, and yourself. The mental toll is real: anxiety before games, perfectionism that becomes paralysis, identity wrapped entirely in performance.

Balancing Everything, Mastering Nothing

You're trying to excel academically while performing at elite levels athletically. Add social pressures, recruitment stress, and the constant comparison to peers. Many athletes suffer in silence because showing vulnerability feels like weakness.

When Injury Steals Your Identity

Your entire life revolves around sport. Then an injury happens. Suddenly, you're sidelined, feeling useless, questioning your worth. Depression and anxiety spike. You're not just recovering physically—you're rebuilding who you are.

What Now? Life After Competition

The sport that defined you is over. You've won championships, broken records, achieved your dreams. But now what? The identity crisis is profound. Many athletes struggle with depression, loss of purpose, and the challenge of building a life beyond sport.

Lack of access to specialized care

We knew what it felt like to struggle in silence. We also knew that getting proper support changed everything. That's why we built Onrise—so other athletes don't have to suffer alone.

Clinician-Backed Peer Support by Retired Collegiate and Professional Athletes

Because athletes often open up first to someone who understands the private language of sport.

Athletes are taught to push through pain long before they are taught to talk about it. They learn to protect the team, hide uncertainty, and keep performing even when something inside them is starting to break. So when life gets heavy—injury, anxiety, lost confidence, isolation, transition, or the fear of losing a role—many stay quiet. Not because they do not need help, but because honesty can feel risky in a performance culture.

That is why peer support matters. Another athlete understands the identity shock after injury, the loneliness that comes when performance and self-worth get tangled together, and the exhausting habit of saying "I'm fine" when you are anything but.

But this is not an informal peer program. Our peer support is delivered by retired collegiate and professional athletes and backed by licensed clinicians. That means athletes get the trust and relatability of someone who has lived enough of the same life to make honesty feel safe, with therapy, psychiatry, and crisis support available when more care is needed.

This model works because it makes the first conversation easier. It lowers the barrier to opening up, helps athletes engage earlier, and connects them to the right level of care at the right time. Human connection opens the door. Clinical backing makes it safer and stronger.
